Chewy
is short for Chewbacca, the character from Star Wars and he was named by
my son Beau. Beau was a wonderful young man who was cut down in the prime
of his life by brain cancer. It was during his last year of life that he
suddenly decided that he wanted a Jack Russell terrier. He said they were
so smart and that if he ever had a dog, that's what he'd want. He had a
friend who had one named Buddy, and he would often recall his antics. His
friend's cousin bred JR's and so I got her name and called her up, sure
enough, she had a litter just about ready to go. I had decided to get one
for Beau for Christmas. I wanted Beau to be able to pick out the pup that
he wanted so, he and I went to take a look at the litter. I told him I
wasn't sure if I could come up with enough money to get it, but I would if
I could (just to try and keep some kind of anticipation going). He chose
Chewy because he said he liked the way his eyes looked. So we left without
taking a puppy, but I had the woman mark the one we wanted and told her
I'd be back to get him in a couple weeks. I brought Chewy home about 2
weeks before Christmas and it made Beau very happy. You have to understand
that Beau was being treated with chemo therapy which affected his strength
and energy, so although he loved Chewy, he did not have the energy or
strength to take care of him or to even play much with him. Chewy was born
on October 29th 2001, exactly 1 month after Beau's 24th birthday on
September 29th, Beau never saw his 25th birthday but died from a massive
brain hemmorhage caused by the cancer on June 25th, 2002. Sometimes I
think that Beau knew he didn't have much time left and that he actually
got Chewy for me and my husband, to kinda fill the void once he was gone.
Not that Chewy can, but he has managed to cheer us up when nothing else
could, he's a constant reminder of Beau, sometimes I can even see the
similarities of his personality with that of Beau's (this is not in anyway a belief in reincarnation, Beau is in heaven with the Lord Jesus). My husband and I
consider Chewy as a gift from Beau.
As a result of the way Chewy came into our household, it's no wonder that
he's spoiled. We came to love him so much that he is now almost like our
child. We give him everything we can, sometimes we get pretty ridiculous
about it too, but it's fun and we have a real good time spoiling Chewy.
Recently, we got him a playmate, Cherry. She's not a full bred JR like
Chewy, but she's cute as a button and is a constant challenge for him,
keeps him on his toes!
